Relocating to Argentina: Build a New Base, Protect Your Wealth, and Do It the Right Way
A practical guide to relocating to Argentina, covering residency, banking, taxes, cost of living and the key steps for building a long-term base.

Why are people relocating to Argentina?
1. A real shift in economic direction. Monthly inflation has come down from the extremes of 2023 to under 2% in recent readings. Annual inflation is still around 33%, so Argentina is not yet a "stable" country. But the trend is clearly toward stabilisation, and many people are positioning themselves early.
2. Access to dollars for individuals. Since April 2025, individuals can buy and hold foreign currency through the banking system without prior approval. For anyone earning abroad and living locally, that is a major practical improvement over the past six years. Some restrictions remain, particularly for companies, so the details matter.
3. Multiple residency routes. Argentina offers several categories, including student, work, retirement, independent means (rentista), investment, family reunification, and a digital nomad visa for people who earn from employers or clients outside Argentina. Processing typically takes from a couple of months to around six, depending on the route.
4. Lifestyle and cost of living. World-class cities, European-style culture, excellent food, Patagonia, wine country, and a large international community. For people earning in stronger currencies, daily life can be very affordable, although local inflation has eroded some of the old price advantage.
5. A path to a second citizenship. Argentina has historically offered one of the fastest naturalisation timelines in the region. The 2025 reform tightened this, and some of its citizenship provisions are currently being challenged in court (more on that below).
6. A strategic second base. For people with global income, a foothold in the Southern Hemisphere diversifies where you live, bank and do business.
What relocating to Argentina does not do
Let's be direct, because this is where many people get misled. Moving to Argentina is not a tax holiday and not a way to disappear from your home country's systems. Argentina taxes its residents on worldwide income, and it is part of the global transparency framework. Becoming a resident is a serious legal step with real obligations.
The rules you need to understand before you move
Immigration reform (Decree 366/2025). Argentina's 2025 decree tightened several rules:
- Absence limits. Temporary residency can be cancelled after six continuous months outside Argentina, and permanent residency after one year. Residency has to be maintained by actually living there.
- Health insurance at entry. Non-residents must show health insurance covering their stay.
- "False tourism." Border officers can refuse entry to someone they believe is a "tourist" who actually intends to live or work in the country. Endless visa runs are no longer a safe strategy.
- Citizenship. The decree requires two years of continuous legal residence and moves the decision from federal judges to the migration authority. In mid-2026, appellate courts challenged parts of this, so the legal position is unsettled. Anyone planning around citizenship should get current advice.
Tax residency. Foreigners generally become Argentine tax residents after roughly 12 months of presence, or earlier with permanent residency. From then on:
- Income tax is progressive, from 5% up to 35%, on worldwide income.
- Capital gains for residents are taxed at a flat 15%.
- Bienes Personales, an annual wealth tax, can apply to worldwide assets above a threshold. This catches many expats by surprise.
- Argentina has treaties with around 20 countries, but not with the United States. Americans rely on foreign tax credits and the foreign earned income exclusion.
Currency and banking. Individuals have much more freedom than before, but rules have shifted more than once, including temporary restrictions on combining certain dollar purchases. Structuring your banking correctly from day one matters.
None of this is a reason not to go. It is a reason to plan.
What protects you when you do it right
- Protection from status problems. The correct visa category and a clean file prevent refusals, cancellations and awkward border conversations.
- Protection from tax surprises. Understanding when residency triggers worldwide taxation lets you plan the timing, structure and reporting before you arrive.
- Protection from lost time and fees. Incorrect applications cost months, and some mistakes are hard to undo.
- Protection from bad advice. Forums and social media are full of outdated or wrongly generalised information. This is a fast-moving jurisdiction.
Why applications run into trouble
Argentine authorities, like banks, expect complete and consistent paperwork. The most common problems are:
- Documents missing apostilles, legalisations or official translations
- Criminal record certificates that are outdated or incorrectly certified
- Proof of income or independent means that does not match the visa category
- Choosing a category that doesn't fit your real situation
- Spending too much time outside the country after residency is granted
- Entering as a tourist while intending to settle

Frequently asked questions
Is it easy to get residency in Argentina?
Argentina has more accessible routes than many countries, but the 2025 reform made the rules stricter and enforcement tighter. A well-prepared application in the right category makes a big difference.
Will I pay tax in Argentina?
Once you become a tax resident, yes, on worldwide income. This usually happens after about 12 months of presence, or earlier with permanent residency. Planning before you arrive is essential.
Can I keep my foreign bank accounts?
Generally yes, but they must be reported correctly to the Argentine tax authority once you are resident, and they may count toward the wealth tax base.
Can you guarantee my residency will be approved?
No honest provider can. Approval is always the authorities' decision. We significantly improve your chances by choosing the right route and preparing your file properly.
How long does it take?
It depends on the category and your documents. Some routes take a couple of months, others up to around six. Good preparation saves time.
Can I travel while my application is processed?
Often yes, but it depends on your status and the stage of the process. We will advise you during the assessment.
Can I become an Argentine citizen?
It is possible, but the rules are currently in flux and partly contested in court. We will tell you what applies to your situation at the time you apply.
